Matatu Operators Issue a Statement on the Latest Fuel Prices
Matatu operators have decried the latest fuel prices that is expected to remain in effect for the next one month.
While giving an official statement on Friday 17, the matatu operators lamented the government's move to increase fuel prices by about Ksh 8 per litre.
The matatu representatives noted with concern how the move will have far-reaching effects in that sector, citing that they have so far received no government stimulus package in the face of COVID-19.
“As we are all aware, the government did not extend any economic stimulus to the industry. Neither did it reduce any other taxes and levies,” the statement read.
They also highlighted the plight of the matatu sector as one laden with unscrupulous taxation from some government employers as corrupt deals that many operators practice to avoid facing the full wrath of the law for any form of violation.
“The industry is also laden with unofficial taxes from law enforcers,” they added.
On the impact of COVID-19 on the sector, they remarked that the number of passengers has reduced because harsh economic measures to curb the pandemic has consequently resulted in fewer passengers willing to travel.
“The sector has incurred losses as a result of COVID-19 containment measures. To date, passenger numbers have dropped because of the state of the economy leading to low average travels,”
Their statement has come barely two days after Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) released the new fuel prices expected to last up to October 14.
Despite a public outcry to revoke these rates, the government has remained adamant, demonstrating no sign of turning back.
It seems Kenyans will have to endure for a while as they hope to see a change in the coming days.
